Kashmir Calling! Need Feedback on Our 7-Day Itinerary (Srinagar-Gulmarg-Pahalgam)

This is one of those itineraries that sounds simple on paper Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, done but the actual planning trips people up more than they expect. The big thing to understand early is that Gulmarg and Pahalgam sit in opposite directions from Srinagar, and there's no direct road between them. Every route runs back through Srinagar. Once that clicks, the whole week falls into place a lot more easily.

Here's a 7-day version that keeps the pace comfortable instead of cramming everything into a rushed loop.

Day 1: Arrive in Srinagar

However you're arriving flight, train to Jammu and then road, or driving the whole way plan for this day to just be about settling in. Check into your houseboat or hotel, take a slow shikara ride on Dal Lake as the evening light comes in, and don't plan anything ambitious. After a long travel day, this is the kind of evening that sets the tone for the rest of the trip.

Day 2: Srinagar Sightseeing

Spend the day exploring the city itself. The Mughal Gardens Nishat, Shalimar, and Chashme Shahi are all close together and easy to cover in one outing. If you have time, a walk through the old city markets or a visit to Shankaracharya Temple for the view over the valley is worth fitting in. Keep this daylight, since tomorrow involves a drive.

Day 3: Srinagar to Gulmarg

Gulmarg is about 50 km from Srinagar, roughly a 1.5 to 2 hour drive depending on traffic near Tangmarg. Head out in the morning, check into your hotel, and spend the rest of the day taking in the meadows and mountain views. If you're visiting in winter, this is also when you'd plan your gondola ride book those tickets ahead of time, since they sell out fast during peak snow season.

Day 4: Gulmarg, Full Day

This day stays in Gulmarg. If the gondola wasn't done yesterday, today's the day for it the ride up to Apharwat Peak is genuinely one of the highlights of a Kashmir trip. Outside of that, Gulmarg itself is a slow place; a lot of people just spend the afternoon walking through the meadows or sitting somewhere with a view and a cup of kahwa.

Day 5: Gulmarg back to Srinagar, then onward toward Pahalgam

Since there's no direct road from Gulmarg to Pahalgam, today's drive routes back through Srinagar before continuing on to Pahalgam about 90 to 95 km from Srinagar, roughly 2 to 3 hours. It's a longer driving day, so leave Gulmarg early. By evening, you should be checked into Pahalgam with enough daylight left for a short walk along the Lidder River.

Day 6: Pahalgam, Full Day

Pahalgam's main draw is the valleys around it Betaab Valley, Aru Valley, and Chandanwari are all within a short drive and can comfortably be covered in a single day. These spots are calmer than Gulmarg and have a different character entirely more river and pine forest, less alpine meadow. It's a nice contrast to close out the trip on.

Day 7: Return Journey

From Pahalgam, head back to Srinagar for your flight, train connection, or onward road journey. Build in some buffer time here Kashmir's roads are scenic but can be slower than expected, especially if there's been recent weather.

A Few Things That'll Save You Some Headaches

The biggest planning mistake people make with this itinerary is trying to do Gulmarg and Pahalgam back to back without going through Srinagar there simply isn't a direct route, and trying to force one usually means hours wasted on indirect roads through Tangmarg and Anantnag. Building the Srinagar stop into your route from the start, rather than treating it as a detour, makes the whole week feel a lot less rushed.

April through October is generally the easiest window for this itinerary, since the roads are clear and all three towns are fully accessible. If you're going specifically for the Gulmarg gondola and snow, December to February is the season, but check road conditions before you lock in your dates, since heavy snowfall can occasionally slow things down between Tangmarg and Gulmarg.

Travelling This Route as a Group

If you're doing this trip with family or a group of friends, getting a single vehicle for the whole week tends to work out far easier than booking separate cabs for each leg especially since you're backtracking through Srinagar twice. A tempo traveller booked for the full Kashmir circuit means the same driver and vehicle stay with you from Srinagar to Gulmarg, back to Srinagar, and on to Pahalgam, without the hassle of arranging new transport at every stop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it possible to go from Gulmarg directly to Pahalgam?

Not directly, there's no road connecting the two without passing back through Srinagar. Any itinerary covering both needs to factor in that backtrack.

How many days do I actually need for this itinerary?

Seven days gives you a comfortable pace without rushing. It's possible to compress this into 5 days by cutting one day from Gulmarg or Pahalgam, but it gets noticeably more tiring.

What's the best time of year for this Kashmir circuit?

April to October works well for general sightseeing across all three destinations. December to February is ideal if you specifically want snow and the Gulmarg gondola experience.

Is this itinerary manageable for families with kids or older travelers?

Yes, the pace is gentle enough most days involve one drive followed by a relaxed day at the destination, rather than constant movement.
